Matt Bouldin: Where Does He Rank?

Matt Bouldin's seven three-pointers versus Washington State brought back visions of Blake Stepp and Dan Dickau. He even pulled up from deep beyond the arc as a "heat check", the way Stepp would when he got hot. I've always felt that Bouldin was a player in the mold of those two, that should be attempting a high volume of 3-Pointers per game the way Dan and Blake used to back in the old Kennel.

Dickau averaged 6.16 3pt attempts/game his Junior season, and 8.0 attempts/game his Senior season.

Stepp averaged 6.77 3pt attempts/game his Junior season, and 7.36 attempts/game his Senior season.

Bouldin averaged 3.8 attempts per game over the past 2 years, but so far this year as the leader of this team, he is up to 6 attempts/game.

It's great to see Bouldin entering into Dickau/Stepp territory because he is the type of player that can get his shot off easily when needed, without it feeling forced. I hope he continues to shoot it at this pace.  Since the beginning of last season, Bouldin is shooting over 42% from beyond the arc.

This made me wonder where Bouldin ranks in Gonzaga history in the 3 point department. Lets take a look....

Gonzaga Career 3-Pointers Made
1. Blake Stepp 288 (2001-04)
2. Richie Frahm 280 (1996-00)
3. Matt Santangelo 252 (1996-00)
4. Derek Raivo 243 (2004-07)
5. John Rillie 230 (1993-95)
6. Dan Dickau 188 (2001-02)
7. Kyle Bankhead 169 (2001-04)
8. Jon Kinloch 157 (1993-96)
9. Matt Bouldin 148 (2007-present)
10. Jarrod Davis 133 (1991-92)

Gonzaga Single Season 3-Pointers Made
1. Dan Dickau 117 (2002)
2. Blake Stepp 98 (2003)
3. John Rillie 96 (1995)
4. Richie Frahm 93 (1999)
5. John Rillie 91 (1994)
6. Richie Frahm 90 (2000)
7. Derek Raivio 85 (2007)
8. Blake Stepp 79 (2004)
9. Derek Raivio 77 (2005)
10. Richie Frahm 77 (1998)

Bouldin just cracked the career list this season. If he continues at his current pace he should end up ahead of Dickau at 6th All-Time in 3-Pointers made (Right behind our beloved John Rillie). He also has a chance to make the single season list the way he is playing so far. 2.5 threes per game would get him into the 80's range for a season total. Obviously no surprise to see Dickau and Stepp at the top of the single season record.

Great write-up Cdub. I enjoyed it a lot. I hope Bouldin continues the hot streak and it leads us to a bunch of wins this year.
